Whakatane

Day 17, Sunday 23rd 2003f November 2003

In the morning we plan to explore the northbound regions around Rotorua (Hell's Gate etc.) before driving on to Whakatane, the coastal heart of the Eastern Bay of Plenty. We'll be staying at the B&B Motuhora Rise, hosted by Toni and Jeff Spellmeyer.

Journal

Rotorua

Had delicious breakfast at Swiss Lodge, then whooshed off for appointment with Moana from Rotoiti Tours, then had appointment with Ria and Sonny from Superia Tours for a personal guided tour of Rotorua. Ria is a dutch woman, who landed herself here in NZ, and got married to Sonny, a Maori. We visited the Rotorua museum, which explains the local Maori history with the thermal activity around here.

Whakatane

Then left for coastal town of Whakatane... whoosh-whoosh Had a bit of trouble finding the Motuhura Rise B&B, got there eventually, checked in and left for a stroll around the area, took walk towards an old "Pa" site on top of a hill, gloomy weather. Doesn't look good for our trip tomorrow...
Went back into town and had dinner at Subways. Decided to catch a movie in the local cinema: the "Matrix Reloaded". No crowds here.
